Introduction
Hi, good day guys! Kumusta kayong lahat? Ako nga pala si Ryan Bondoc at isa ako sa mga voice coach here at Voice Actors at Home PH.
And for today’s video, we’re going to talk about how to deepen our voice.
Observations on Deep Voices
Okay, so yan yung pag-uusapan natin ngayon.
Four Tips for Deepening Your Voice
Bibigyan ko kayo ng four tips kung ano yung mga ginagawa kong practice and exercise para maabot or magkaroon ng mga ganitong malalim na boses:
Tip 1: Store Air
I store air, or humihinga ako ng malalim bago ako magbasa ng isang linya. For example:
(Inhale and gayahin ang video) “I really don’t want to do this.”
(Inhale and gayahin ang video) “Ayokong gawin ang bagay na to.”
Kung naobserbahan niyo yun ng mabuti, ang ginawa ko ay huminga ako, nag store ng hangin, and as I read the line, doon ko unti binibitawan yung hangin.
Not entirely agad ibubuhos ko yung hangin doon sa isang line, but I distribute it, isa isa.
For example, again:
(Gayahin ang video) “I really don’t want to do this.”
And then sa dulo, pwede mo nang i release lahat nung inipon mong air.
Tip 2: Voice Placement
Voice placement.
For example, meron tayong projects na sobrang habang recording, from morning to afternoon or hanggang gabi ang recording mo tuloy-tuloy.
What I do is I get close to the mic, and then again, remember breath, lower register, or chest.
(Gayahin ang video) “Wag kayong mag-alala, gagawin natin ang lahat upang matalo natin ang ating kalaban. Hinding-hindi tayo magpapatalo.”
So, by applying tip one and tip number two, nakapag-produce ako ng malalim na boses.
Tip 3: Vocal Exercise
For tip number three, eto naman yung ginagawa kong exercise para ma-achieve or ma-sustain natin ang ganitong klaseng boses.
What I do is vocal exercise.
Kung papansinin nyo, when you do that sound, magkakaroon ng vibration dito sa chest ninyo, “Hm, hmm.”
Do that lang mga two to three minutes, “Hm, hmm.”
Oo, sige. Oo, sige.”
And then after that, sustain mo na sya.
Okay, so do that everyday.
So if you will be consistent sa mga practice na ito, alam ko na in no time, maaabot mo rin yung different kind of vocal range.
Tip 4: Drink Plenty of Water
Tip number four: Drink plenty of water.
Ako, sa recording ko, lagi akong merong tubig kasi talagang nakakatulong ito for us to stay hydrated.
At sabi nga rito, drinking plenty of water does make sure that the cells inside the voice box are nourished and resilient.
If the body as a whole is dehydrated, the vocal folds get tired faster and they recover more slowly from heavy use.
Extra Tip: Watch Voice Actors with Deep Voices
Conclusion

Introduction
Hi, good day guys! How’s everyone? I am Ryan Bondoc and I am one of the voice coaches here at Voice Actors at Home PH.
And for today’s video, we’re going to talk about how to deepen our voice.
Before answering that question, we first need to know where we will apply this deep voice.
It can be used for dubbing, voice narration, and definitely for movie trailers.
Observations on Deep Voices
If we’re going to observe our surroundings, we would really notice that there are people who naturally have a deep voice.
And there are also people who don’t, and instead have a thin or high-pitched voice.
However, when it comes to voice acting, they can manage to deepen their voice.
Okay, so that’s what we’re going to discuss today.
Four Tips for Deepening Your Voice
I will give you four tips on the practices and exercises I do to achieve or have this deep voice:
Tip 1: Store Air
I store air, or I breathe deeply before I read a line. For example:
(Inhale and mimic the video) “I really don’t want to do this.”
(Inhale and mimic the video) “Ayokong gawin ang bagay na to.” (I don’t want to do this.)
If you observe carefully, what I did was breathe, store air, and as I read the line, I gradually released the air.
Not entirely pouring the air into one line, but I distribute it, little by little.
For example, again:
(Mimic the video) “I really don’t want to do this.”
And then at the end, you can release all the stored air.
Tip 2: Voice Placement
Voice placement. Because when we talk to people or have normal conversations, our voice comes from our throat.
Now, if we want to have a deeper voice, we will get it from our chest.
It’s really helpful to get the voice from the lower register because it preserves our throat.
For example, we have projects with really long recordings, from morning to afternoon or continuous recordings until evening.
It really helps to know how to place the voice.
Usually, deep voices are used for villains or mysterious characters in dubbing.
What I do is I get close to the mic, and then again, remember, breath, lower register, or chest.
(Mimic the video) “Wag kayong mag-alala, gagawin natin ang lahat upang matalo natin ang ating kalaban. Hinding-hindi tayo magpapatalo.” (Don’t worry, we will do everything to defeat our enemy. We will never lose.)
So, by applying tip one and tip number two, I was able to produce a deep voice.
Tip 3: Vocal Exercise
For tip number three, this is the exercise I do to achieve or sustain this kind of voice.
What I do is vocal exercise.
First, I just make a sound, “Hmm, hmmm.”
If you notice, when you do that sound, there will be a vibration in your chest, “Hm, hmm.”
Do that for about two to three minutes, “Hm, hmm.”
You will notice that when you reach your lower register.
Okay, so you got the range, you are now in the lower register.
Now, add a line, “Oo, sige. Oo, sige. Oo, sige.” (Yes, okay. Yes, okay. Yes, okay.)
And then after that, sustain it.
Okay, so do that every day.
So if you will be consistent with these practices, I know that in no time, you will reach a different kind of vocal range.
Tip 4: Drink Plenty of Water
Tip number four: Drink plenty of water.
During my recordings, I always have water with me because it really helps us stay hydrated.
As it’s said, drinking plenty of water ensures that the cells inside the voice box are nourished and resilient.
If the body as a whole is dehydrated, the vocal folds get tired faster and they recover more slowly from heavy use.
Extra Tip: Watch Voice Actors with Deep Voices
Extra tip: Watch voice actors who have this kind of vocal range.
For example, those who inspired me include Peter Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime, and Don LaFontaine for movie trailers.
Locally, there’s Peter Musngi.
Lastly, my absolute favorite is Benedict Cumberbatch when he voiced Smaug.
