Introduction
“Do you want to know if voice acting is for you? Here’s a basic checklist I made to see if you are.
Passion and Motivation
Number one, do you have the passion for the craft and need to earn or a need to learn?
Do you enjoy hearing and copying voices you encounter on TV, radio, events, video games, etc., and have the desire to do that too?
Or are you driven to find other means to earn a little extra money on the side or full-time?
Or do you just want to learn something new?
Choosing either of the three options is totally okay, but of course, having a good balance of all three will take you even further in the industry.”
Reading Well
“Number two, do you like to read? Being a voice actor, you will be reading scripts all the time, so if you don’t like reading, sorry, you’ll either have to learn to love it or learn to read well.
And reading well means learning script or character analysis, proper pronunciation, enunciation, reading at a certain pace, delivery patterns, etc.
Acting Skills
Number three, do you like to act or do you have basic acting skills? Because VO isn’t just about reading scripts. Voice acting is acting, and acting gives life to scripts.”
Resources
“Number four, do you have the resources? In voice acting, you will need resources such as time, money, etc.
Time to audition, record, edit, train, practice, and manage the business side of VO as well. And money, of course, to invest in tools, equipment, training, and other business expenses.
So if you’re low on funds, don’t worry, all you have to do is be creative and resourceful.
There’s no need to spend so much right away if what you have works, but the goal is to level up your resources as you progress.”
Business Management Skills
“Number five, do you have basic business management skills?
I know it sounds a little intimidating, but yes, voice acting is an art form, but if you want to legit earn from it, you also have to treat it as a legit business.
Taking Direction
Number six, can you take direction?
With most VO projects, clients or directors and/or the creative team or agency that’s there with you will give you directions on how to deliver the script, and you have to be able to understand what they’re asking for and deliver it the way they want.
This is where acting skills, training, and script reading practices help a lot.”
Constructive Criticism
“Number seven, can you take constructive criticism?
I know it can be hard to take constructive criticism sometimes, no matter how nicely it’s said, but you just gotta listen, suck it up, take it like a champ, and be grateful for these solutions given to you, no matter how bruised your ego feels.
And when you set your ego aside, you make room for more growth.
You’ll usually encounter constructive feedback when you consult with coaches, mentors, VO practice groups, and even clients, and I highly, highly recommend that you get their input.
It’s good practice to learn from experts and peers. How else are you gonna grow if you don’t know?”
Handling Rejection
“Number eight, can you handle rejection?
Voice actors eat rejection for breakfast, sometimes lunch, merienda, and dinner too. It’s a normal part of our work.
We can’t win all the auditions all the time, even the veterans. So what do we do to stay sane?
Audition, let go, repeat.
In this way, if you win a project, it’s always a happy surprise, but if you don’t, it’s okay because you forgot that you auditioned for it anyway because you’re on to thenext audition or looking for the next project.
Working with People
Number nine, do you work well with people?
Being a freelancer is a solo job, but we still do work with different people in projects, training, and in communities.
Building connections leads to a more successful career, and you also won’t feel so lonely too.
Working Alone
Number ten, and speaking of loneliness, can you work alone in a corner under comforters in a closet or a wooden box all week long and more often than not without air conditioning or a fan?
Can you do that? Can you?
I’m not trying to scare you, but yes, these are the usual conditions a voice actor works through to get that perfect recording and to get that perfect glow, especially if you work at home.
Conclusion
And that’s it! So how did you do?
If you said yes to all these things, congratulations!
You are ready to jump into the crazy amazing world of VO.
But if not, don’t worry.
At least you already know what you need to prepare for.
Keep moving forward and keep learning.
If you have any questions or reactions, feel free to share them in the comments down below. See you in the next video!”
Introduction
Passion and Motivation
Reading Well
“Number two, gusto mo ba magbasa?
Acting Skills
Number three, gusto mo ba umarte o mayroon ka bang basic acting skills?
Taking Direction
Number six, kayang mo bang mag-take ng direction?
Constructive Criticism
Handling Rejection
Audition, let go, repeat.
Sa ganitong paraan, kung manalo ka sa isang project, it’s always a happy surprise, pero kung hindi, okay lang dahil nakalimutan mo na na nag-audition ka para dito anyway dahil you’re on to the next audition o naghahanap ng susunod na project.
Working with People
Working Alone
Number ten, at speaking of loneliness, kayang mo bang magtrabaho mag-isa sa isang sulok under comforters sa isang closet o sa isang wooden box all week long at mas madalas kaysa hindi without air conditioning o fan?
Kayang mo ba iyon? Kaya mo ba?
