Introduction

Topic: Voice Acting Workshops

Kaya…

Free Voice Acting Workshops

Paid Voice Acting Workshops

VocAlliance Foundational Acting Course

Competitive Edge Accent Training

Okay, I’m gonna code switch here just to drive a point home.

But I took the Accent Edge Training Course with Eliza Jane Schneider.

And I believe that what I’ve learned there will go a long way in helping me break into international markets.

I suggest this because we tend to listen to people who speak the way we do, in a way that sounds familiar, in a way that doesn’t call attention to the accent.

Think of how foreigners sometimes struggle speaking Tagalog or one of the many Filipino dialects.

How do we tend to feel about them?

Pinapakinggan ba talaga natin sila o mas pinupuna natin ang accent nila?

My bet is we notice the accent more.

Now let’s turn the tables. If you speak English with an accent that’s heavily influenced by your first language, some of your listeners will notice and get distracted by that accent.

But if you can achieve a neutral accent and add that your arsenal, then you can communicate better with more people and reach more markets.

Other Voice Acting-Related Workshops

Okay, balik na ulit tayo sa Filipino. May mga ibang workshops ba akong ma-suggest?

Hit Productions ADR Scriptwriting Workshop

Habang sinasalin o tina-translate mo yung script, kailangan mo siyang maintindihan, ‘di ba?

Third World Improv

Okay, may iba pa bang workshops na pwedeng salihan?

Naku, napakarami!

[dead air]

Mukhang ako, kailangan kong itake.

Sightlines Actors’ Space Meisner Technique

Isa pa yung Meisner Courses ng Sightlines Actors’ Space.

Ang focus ng Meisner technique ay well, isa ‘to sa mga favorite quotes ko tungkol sa acting, “Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances”.

Yung dalawang ‘to: yung commonality ng Third World Improve at ng Meisner Technique, they both teach you to react.

So, reacting to the words in the page, reacting to the people in the scene with, reacting to basically what’s happening in front of you or what’s happening in your imagination.

So both of these things, nakakatulong yan sa voice acting.

Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)

Pwede ka ring mag-attend ng workshop with the PETA or Philippine Educational Theater Association.

Galleon Theatre.MNL

It’s All Acting

Okay?

That’s it po.

Bye mga KapitVAHay.

Introduction

Hello KapitVAHays!

I’m Luis Cruz, and I’m one of the Com Leads of Voice Actors at Home P.H., or VAHP for short.

I’m here again to answer some of your questions about voice acting.

Why am I doing this? Because VAHP’s objective is to help a thousand Filipinos earn full-time voice acting incomes by 2025.

And one of the things we do to achieve this goal is these Q&As.

Topic: Voice Acting Workshops

Now, the question I’ll answer is: What voice acting workshops are good to attend?

Okay, this is a long discussion because there are so many good workshops available.

So…

Free Voice Acting Workshops

Let’s start with the free options.

Since I started voice acting, I’ve been participating in freeviews or workouts of VocAlliance, another group of voice actors whose aim or goal is also to help voice actors and the whole industry.

The workouts are like mini-workshops where there are those who read scripts, and people who provide criticism, comments, suggestions to improve the delivery of participants.

I admit, VocAlliance’s workouts are quite infrequent these days.

Probably only once a month now.

But I know a few more groups that regularly schedule workouts like this.

One of these is the Voice Over Lounge or V.O.L. which you can find on Discord.

As for Voice Actors at Home P.H., we will also have workouts soon, but we are still planning that.

I’m sure there are other groups, especially if you look on Twitter and Facebook. Some are free and some are paid.

There are local ones and there are also those targeting the U.S. or international market.

It depends on the group, and who’s involved, but sometimes there are veterans or coaches who provide critique.

And sometimes, it’s just your peers or those at your level helping you.

But anyway, my suggestions are VocAlliance, V.O.L, and when they come, the Voice Actors at Home P.H. workouts.

These are my suggestions because of course, they are based in the Philippines and I also often visit or join them.

Paid Voice Acting Workshops

Okay, let’s talk about paid workshops.

VocAlliance Foundational Acting Course

Of course, I’ll start with the VocAlliance Foundational Acting Course because I went through it.

And I admit, I also help in organizing this workshop.

If you want a course that’s a class, the Foundational Acting Course is my first suggestion.

VAHPH 1-on-1 Coaching

What if you prefer one-on-one mentorship?

Of course, let’s go with VAHP, because we have coaches here who can coach you, mentor you.

Just look for the link. I’ll post it here.

Competitive Edge Accent Training

Another workshop I’d like to recommend, especially if you want to enter the international or U.S. markets, is the Accent Training Course.

Okay, I’m gonna code switch [Tagalog to English] here just to drive a point home.

Do we really listen to them or do we just criticize their accent?

My bet is we notice the accent more.

Yes, we still listen to the message but the accent can be a bit distracting.

Okay, let’s go back to Filipino. Do I have other workshops to suggest?

Hit Productions ADR Scriptwriting Workshop

If you’re a dubber or you want to get into the dubbing or localization industry, Hit Productions has a workshop for dubbing scriptwriters.

What? Script writing?

What does script writing have to do with voice acting?

Okay, this explanation is a bit long, but I’ll try to give two reasons.

First, script writing is good practice for dubbing because while you’re writing a script, you have to do all the lines of all the characters.

So you’re already dubbing an entire show by yourself.

Second, you learn script analysis.

While you’re translating the script, you have to understand it, right?

And script analysis, that helps with voice acting.

So there are probably other reasons why script writing can help with dubbing, but I’ll stop here for now because there are so many of them.

Third World Improv

Okay, are there any other workshops that can be joined?

Oh, there are so many! One of these is Third World Improv.

I don’t know how to explain because improv or improvisation can greatly help in acting.

And I don’t know where to start.

[dead air]

Looks like I need to take it.

Sightlines Actors’ Space Meisner Technique

Another one is the Meisner Courses of Sightlines Actors’ Space.

The focus of the Meisner technique is well, one of my favorite quotes about acting, “Acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances”.

These two: the commonality of Third World Improve and Meisner Technique, they both teach you to react.

So, reacting to the words on the page, reacting to the people in the scene with, reacting to basically what’s happening in front of you or what’s happening in your imagination.

So both of these things, they help with voice acting.

Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)

You can also attend a workshop with the PETA or Philippine Educational Theater Association.

Galleon Theatre.MNL

You can also go to Galleon Theater Manila if you want.

It’s All Acting

And you might notice a pattern: most of my suggestions are acting workshops.

Because voice acting is really just acting.

And the only difference between it and acting in film and theater is that the audience doesn’t see you.

The skills needed for voice acting and acting are almost the same.

So if you want to get better at voice acting, take an acting workshop like the ones I mentioned in this video.

End

Okay, this video seems to be getting quite long so I’ll stop here for now because I don’t want to overload you.

If you want to know our answers to other questions I have about voice acting, please subscribe to the Voice Actors at Home P.H. channel.

And if you know someone who wants to learn voice acting and is looking for workshops they can join, please share this video with them to help them out. Okay?

That’s it.

Bye KapitVAHays.
